Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell won gold in the men’s 49er. Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre also won gold for Team GB in the 470-class.
Fletcher and Bithell were centimeters ahead of silver medal winners Germany. Germany was a thorn in Team GB’s side throughout the competition but as Germany took the final turn they fell into second.
The pair used to be rivals before teaming up to compete together in the Olympics and won European and world titles. This year’s games marks the duo’s first Olympic gold medals.
The gold medal win for Mills means she has now got consecutive Olympic titles following her gold in the 470-class at the 2016 games in Rio. It was also Eilidh McIntyre’s first games and gold medal.
The duo had won two races and never finished out with the top four and had a 14 point lead going into the race. Their advantage meant they had to come in any of the top seven places. Their success marked Team GB’s third gold medal after Gilles Scott earned gold on Tuesday.
This years sailing performance has been Team GB’s best in recent history.
