LIVERPOOL 2021/22 SEASON PREVIEW: A SEASON TO BE CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC

With the new Premier League season fast approaching, Liverpool will be looking to come back fighting and challenge for that elusive title once again, but a lack of summer incomings may see another emotional rollercoaster for fans alike.

The main talking point for Liverpool is without a doubt key players coming back to full fitness at the right time, the likes of Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and more importantly, Virgil Van Dijk all looking raring to go right from the off, but the summer arrival of Ibrahima Konate will give Klopp and his coaching staff selection headaches as to who should partner Van Dijk this season.

Finishing in the top four last season was so crucial for Liverpool, as it allows them to remain competitive ahead of the new season and keep competing at the highest level, especially with the problems they faced last season with injury.

There is no guarantee that the reds will avoid the same level of injuries again, and fans are concerned over the lack of further business this summer to add to the arrival of Konate, and no replacement for now PSG midfielder Gini Wijnaldum remains a problem, as the Dutchman was only one of a handful of players who avoided any injury setbacks in the middle of the park.

The recent emergence of Harvey Elliott is a massive boost to the squad this summer, and after an impressive pre-season it is expected that he could be given a lot of opportunities this season. Kostas Tsmikas is another player that impressed over this pre-season, and with the recent injury to Andy Robertson which could see the Scot miss the first four games of the season, Tsmikas will be looking to impress to make the decision for when Robertson does return, difficult for Klopp.

Liverpool will be hoping to see another high scoring season from the main man Mo Salah. The Egyptian finished last season with 31 goals in all competitions and Klopp will be hoping he can pull up similar figures this season, but also for him to get more support from the likes of Mané and Firmino, with both only scoring 16 and 9 goals in all competitions last season. It is crucial that the supporting cast of Salah turn up if Liverpool are to go on the hunt for another Premier league title.

Liverpool certainly have the XI to win the league, however, their squad cannot, and unless further additions to the squad are to be made it is hard to see how they can overcome the likes of Manchester City this season. If they were to get lucky with their injuries like they did when they won the title back in 2020, then there is no reason to say why they can’t win the league.

If they are expecting to progress in cup competitions and the latter stages of the champions league, then this season could be tough for Klopp’s team, but with the hunger back to regain their crown and with a full capacity Anfield back, it can be a massive boost in their hunt for more trophies.
